Mr. Henry Tillman Snead, 81, passed away April 30, 2017 in Edgefield, South Carolina. He was born August 26, 1935 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of Earle Swygert Snead and Mary Tillman Snead.
When he was quite young, his family moved to Tampa, Florida. He graduated with honors from Plant High School in 1953, played on the football team and was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed fishing the bays and beaches, often in the early mornings before school. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Shortly after college he married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Morgan of Tampa, Florida.
He began his career at General Electric Company where he was involved in the engineering, marketing and sales of nuclear and fossil power generation equipment for more than thirty years. He served in the U.S. Army as a Reserve Officer and Captain until 1965. During his career with GE, he lived in several places, including Massachusetts, New York, New Orleans, Richmond, Savannah and Charlotte. He resided in Charlotte for 36 years and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Charlotte Rotary Club, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the NC Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Charlotte Country Club, and the Charlotte City Club. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement, and the Shepherd's Center of Charlotte.
In retirement, he and Shirley enjoyed their home in Boca Grande, Florida where he actively pursued his interest in fishing. He enjoyed hunting and was an active wing shooter throughout his life. He had a passionate interest in his family's genealogy and often visited Edgefield, SC, the home of many ancestors, and in 2013 made it his home. He was graciously welcomed into this community, became a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and was active in the Edgefield County Historical Society.
Henry was a quiet, humble man, and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He earned the love, friendship and admiration of most everyone with whom he came in contact. He was devoted to his family and friends, always there to listen.He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Morgan Snead. He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Beth Lankford of Charlotte, NC; a son, Benjamin Tillman Snead of New Bern, NC; a daughter, Susannah Dance of Winter Park, FL; and a son, Thomas Morgan Snead of Charlotte, NC and their spouses, Todd Lankford, Catherine Snead, Tom Dance and Evans Snead; grandchildren, Thomas and Drew Lankford, Tillman, Lizzie and Charlotte Snead, William and Sarah Morgan Dance, and Anna and Liza Snead. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Anne Kearney of Tampa and her family.
There will be a funeral service at 2:00pm on Monday, May 8, 2017 at Christ Church, 1412 Providence Road in Charlotte with a reception at the church immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Henry's memory to the Edgefield County Historical Society, 108 Courthouse Square, Edgefield, SC 29824; the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210; or a charity of the donor's choice.
