May 18, 1943 - July 19, 2017
Michael (Mike) Sinclair Cathey, 74, peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, July 19, 2017 at the Harris Hospice Unit of Novant Health. Born May 18, 1943, in Charlotte, North Carolina, he is the son of the late Sinclair M. Cathey and Evelyn Norris Cathey.
As a native Charlottean, he was active in his community and his Church - serving as a Deacon at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and a member of Avondale Presbyterian Church. Mike had a passion for driving - enjoyed his time as an over the road truck driver and loved working closer to home as a limo driver for Rose Limousine once he retired. When he wasn't driving, he enjoyed fishing at Cherry Grove Pier, telling jokes, laughing, and being the most amazing granddad. Family was everything to Mike and he loved nothing more than having huge dinners surrounded by those he loved. Throughout his life, Mike provided all of his friends and family his gift of humor, sarcasm, and love. Above all else, no matter what life gave him - he was always grateful for each day, each hug and each I love you. He is now free to breathe easy, sing loudly, and dance freely.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ruby Edwards Cathey; his daughters, Robin Garrett Schmidt, Meredith Cathey Fischer (Robert), and Bonnie Cathey Howard (Robert); brother, Gerald W. Cathey (Kathleen); 11 grandchildren, 7 nieces and 1 great-granddaughter. Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Edward L. Cathey.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 1:00PM at Avondale Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A private inurnment will be held in the Columbarium of the Sacred Gardens of Avondale Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations in memory to either the American Lung Association, Donation Processing Center, PO Box 7000, Albert Lea, MN 56007-8001; or Avondale Presbyterian Church, 2821 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209.
The family would like to extend love and appreciation to the wonderful staff of Novant Health downtown and especially to those in the Harris Hospice Unit for their care and support.
