Charles Emmett Atwell, age 92, was born on December 11, 1924 in Hammond, IN to Harold and Emma Atwell. He died on October 3, 2017 at Southminster Retirement Community in Healthcare.

Chuck was preceded in death by his wife and the mother of his children, Hanna Jane Atwell and by his wife Brenda Urquhart Atwell. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Julia Summerell Atwell. He is also survived by his children of whom he was very proud, Marion Atwell Kay (Gordon), Richard Himes Atwell, Barbara Jean Atwell (Rich Crowl) and Mark Charles Atwell. Grandchildren are Ashley Atwell Wommack and Brian Richard Atwell.

Chuck grew up in Beacon, NY and joined the Navy in pilot training after high school during World War II. When the war ended he was put in the reserves and then attended Purdue University, graduating in Chemical Engineering in 1948. After two years at the Texaco Research Laboratory in Beacon, he moved into lubrication sales with Texaco for his entire career, in Pennsylvania, Texas and then in Charlotte, NC from 1967 until his retirement in1985.

Chuck was for many years a member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He was a member of Caldwell Presbyterian Church for the last few years. He was active with Habitat for Humanity, CROP Walk, mission trips to Mexico and at Shepherds Center. He and Judy enjoyed traveling to other countries, many trips with Road Scholar, and scuba diving in the Caribbean and on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

Chuck was a survivor of multiple myeloma but suffered a stroke several years ago after he and Judy had moved to Southminster. He was well cared for in Healthcare there. His family appreciates the care given by the nurses and CNA's and therapists who enjoyed his spirit and sense of humor.

A memorial service will take place at Caldwell Presbyterian Church at 2:00 on Monday October 9, 2017.
