Gary Boyce Helms, age 80, passed away December 22nd, 2017. He was born on November 28, 1937 in Vancouver, Washington to Perry Hill Helms and Charmion Michael Helms.
Mr. Helms graduated from Aiken (SC) High School in 1955 and thereafter attended Wingate and Clemson colleges. In September of 1958 he enlisted in the US Navy, serving as the electrical engineer on a flight crew that did submarine reconnaissance along the Atlantic coast to Cuba. He served four years of active duty and two years as a reservist. He was honorably discharged from all duty on September 7th, 1964.
The greater part of Mr. Helms' civilian career was in outside sales in the automotive aftermarket. Over the years, he was fortunate to forge very close friendships with his associates, friendships that lasted throughout his life.
Mr. Helms was predeceased by his parents, Perry and Charmion Helms. He is survived by his wife, Linda Carringer Helms; his stepdaughter and husband, Jennifer and Cory Smith; three grandchildren, Zach, Hailey and Sarah; three brothers and spouses, Tim and Meredith Helms of Montreat, NC, Larry and Jane Helms of Charlotte, and Louis and Coral Helms of Charlotte. He is also survived by his four dearly loved nephews, Josh, Jeff, Chris, and Matthew Helms.
Mr. Helms was an Elder of Third Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and in earlier years enjoyed being a member of their choir. He enjoyed music, cooking and old movies. He was very patriotic and was proud of having served his country. Most of all, Mr. Helms loved his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and cared for him.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00pm at Third Presbyterian Church at 4019 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Third Presbyterian Church.
