God called Helen Lorraine Howell Lyerly home on Tuesday evening, December 26, 2017 at the age of 98.
Visitation with the family will begin at 12 noon on Saturday, December 30th at the University Hills Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 1PM. Private graveside services for the family will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
A native of Davie County, NC, Helen was born October 28, 1919, youngest child of the late Charlie Lee Howell and Annie Bell Thomason Howell. She grew up in Cooleemee and the Cooleemee Baptist Church.
A homemaker most of her life, she worked on defense lines during World War II in Salisbury and later briefly worked at the Union Carbide Plant in Charlotte. She and her husband moved from Rowan County, NC to west Charlotte in 1949, settling in the Enderly Park Community, then moved to Cabarrus County in 1991.
Helen was the oldest member of University Hills Baptist Church (formerly known as Enderly Park Baptist) and held her membership there for over 65 years. She was a member of the Faithful Workers Sunday School Class, the Spice of Life Senior Adults Group and was a former children's Sunday School teacher, worked in the Nursery for 20 years, served on numerous committees and was formerly active in the Woman's Missionary Union.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Johnie Purviance Lyerly who died November 7, 1999 at age 78 and their eldest child, Anna Gayle Lyerly who died January 16, 2017 at age 70. In addition to her parents, husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include daughter, Wanda Kay McAllister and husband, Sam of Kannapolis; son, John Thomas Lyerly and wife, Cyndi of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
